Ludlow Rotary Cares 2018 – Results & Feedback

Designed by Dan Chubb

For the fourth year, the Ludlow Rotary Club held Ludlow Rotary Cares.  Resulting from the success of its major fundraising activity during this year, Ludlow Fun Dog Day, in addition to its three major charities, the club has been able to distribute more than five thousand pounds to local community groups and organisations. Since the inception of Ludlow Rotary Cares, the club has distributed over twenty thousand pounds to around forty organisations in Ludlow and neighbouring villages.

This year the club invited applications for awards of upto five hundred pounds for specific projects. The response was excellent and fourteen were chosen from around twenty five. In keeping with its objective to support local activities, the club selected projects benefiting communities, young people and the disadvantaged.
All the recipients were invited to an evening at the Ludlow Mascall Centre, to explain briefly to the panel and the audience about their organisations and what particularly the award would enable them to achieve.
The membership of the panel was Nicky Kershaw – Deputy Lieutenant of Shropshire, Ollie Worthington- manager of TESCO Ludlow, Clive Leworthy – Community Council of Shropshire and three members of the Rotary club. We were honoured to welcome the Mayor of Ludlow, Tim Gill and the Deputy Mayor, Colin Sheward.

cid:image001.png@01CFA699.A77D5650This is just a quick note to thank you and the rest of the Rotarians for organising the presentation night last Tuesday and for the kind donation to our funds.

Jade and I really enjoyed the evening, hearing from all the  representatives of the other local charities. It was fascinating to learn of all the other good work being carried out in the area.

We were delighted to be awarded the donation of £300.00 which will be used to buy gifts for Santa to give out to the local children at our Christmas Lights Switch-on on November 24th.

If you would like to visit the Centre sometime, I would be very happy to give you a tour round and show you some of the wonderful things which are happening here. Kind regards

Young Shropshire in Work – Just to give you a brief update on how Young Shropshire in Work has used the funding from the Rotary. We developed an employability course for young people who were living in or around Ludlow, however the course that we marketed for November 2018 did not have enough young people, we had a number of young people who were interested but who dropped out close to the time of delivery. However we have been developing work tasters through a local employer and they are ready to be ‘tested’ when we have young people ready to take up the offers. In January 2018 we delivered a workshop to vocational students at County Training on a study programme course (those young people who were not going to take on additional formal academic courses and were looking for work. This course was received positively by staff and students. Formal feedback included :

  • My attitude towards the idea of work has improved as a result of the session 100%
  • My chances of gaining a place on a vocational course, voluntary placement, employment or gaining a better job has increased.

In addition these young people have been offered 1:1 mentoring which will be taken up during April/May/June.

I can give you an update on the progress of the Mental Health Drop in Provision on behalf of the applicant the Ludlow and Area Youth Partnership.

Mental Health Drop for Ludlow – During the late autumn we liaised with the Children’s Society to develop a Mental Health Drop in provision for Ludlow and area young People. The support is aimed at young people up to the age of 25. Attached a leaflet which gives you some details of venue and start times. Our first session started on Wednesday 6th February and all of the funding to secure the provision was gained, either from grant funding or community donation. We have enough funding to provide this much needed service for a year, running two times per month at the Ludlow Youth Centre.

On the 6th February we had 47 young people and parents arrive for support. We were amazed at the numbers, concerned by the obvious need, and very pleased we were able to provide some support for what is a growing problem with young peoples mental health.  Since the first session the numbers have reduced to a more manageable  15per session . However we are sure this number will steadily increase once word of mouth spreads the word. Over the next six months we may be able to identify a picture of the type of problems young people are experiencing through some confidential and anonymous data.

Ludlow Amateur Boxing Club

The project has gone very well with Gary successfully completing his coach training at Tamworth boxing centre and immediately taking up duties supporting the other coaches on club evenings.

He has been leading exercise sessions, skill demonstrations and one-to-one coaching with members. He is a great communicator, charismatic and very enthusiastic about the sport and encouraging young people.

Regarding your donation, our expenses have been less than predicted because Gary was able to stay with his father in Birmingham while training and there we no hotel costs. The final cost was £382 – We would be happy to return the excess or any share.

Coreley Memorial Hall – Replacement Doors – Update January 2020

” The pictures shows both sets of doors on the west side of the hall which were replaced and how well they fit into the existing windows, gutters, down pipes and general appearance of the hall.

Not only were the old doors rotting and becoming draughty they were also deficient in security. Therefore with great thanks to the club’s generosity we now have substantially improved security, insulation and enhanced attractiveness of the hall.

On behalf  of the Coreley Memorial Hall Committee and the residents of the parish of Coreley and its neighbours I say again thank you to the Rotary Club Of Ludlow.

With all best wishes to the club and than you for all the good work that you do,

Anton Schooley,Chairman, Coreley Memorial Hall.
